Visits with George

Once a week, sometimes on a monday, but mostly fridays, I travel to Coleman Medium to visit with George. It takes about an hour and twenty minutes to get there-with no traffic. Upon arrival I have to fill out a visitation form and wait. Sometimes they call you right away and other times it seems to take forever. Once in the visiting room it takes around 15-20 minutes for George to come out. By then I usually have his lunch ready for him from the overpriced vending machines. Salad-$5.50, Sandwich-$4.00, Cheesecake-$3.00, Almond Joy-$1.25, Apple Pie-$3.00, Coffee-$1.25, (2)Yoo-Hoo-$1.50ea, Mozz sticks-$1.00, Fresh Fruit-$4.50.
We talk about what’s going on with his case, bills that are pending that might affect him, the blog. Usually before we get to any of that, George will ask for a run down of how everyone is doing. My mother, his sister, his niece, etc. etc. I stay only 2, 2 1/2 hours as my ears can’t tolerate much more. When I started visiting George 7 years ago, I thought it would become easier, routine-like. But, it has not. It has become harder and harder. I get a knot in my stomach every time I leave there. I drive home thinking why won’t they give this guy a chance? Who is benefitting keeping this man locked up any longer? How do killers and rapist get second chances and not George? Why Why Why???? I can’t figure it out, it makes no sense.
I will continue to visit George every week-no matter how hard it is, or gets.
